The minimum “Eligibility Index” to be considered for Fall 2013 CSULB freshmen admission:
Graduates of California high schools and other California residents: 3,200 minimum “Eligibility Index” to be considered. (Be aware that this is higher than the minimum for CSU system-wide eligibility.)
Other non-California residents: 3,502 minimum “Eligibility Index” to be considered.

Scholarships/Monetary Awards- One will be merit based on All-Star representation (prior to or with CSULB Rugby) & Two Our 49er Rugby Foundation has given out two monetary awards to existing Long Beach State Students/Rugby players.

We have a long legacy of being one the top teams in collegiate rugby in the US. The club was founded in 1974 by Dr.Dale"doc"Toohey (CSULB Hall of fame). We have won multiple tournaments and was former DI Pacific Coast Champions, Southern California Champion and been to the final four three times. Fourteen of our players have been recognized as Collegiate All Americans (two of which are on our coaching staff) and we have had a player be selected for the Woodley award winner, given to the Collegiate player of the year. (Chris Rohrbach). We have toured every two years as a club and have been to every major rugby playing nation and Just got back from a successful tour of ITALY August 2013.
To improve our program we have put together a quality team of people to support the CSULB Rugby player become the best player that he can be. Some of the highlights of our program is having a year round dedicated rugby pitch, Lockers and weight room access, top coaches (see their bio's below), International guest coaches, an active alumni group (49er Rugby foundation a 501c non-profit), trainers, film, parents group and strong record of graduating our athletes. Jason is a CSULB Alumni who has been involved with rugby for over 20 years. Jason started playing rugby for the Lane Cove Tigers (Australia). On returning to the US he played senior men’s rugby locally prior to coming to CSULB as a player. While at Long Beach State he played on a very successful squad and toured to Ireland. Jason takes over the head coach after being an assistant coach at CSULB for four years.
Dr.Emyr Williams: Director of Rugby
Emyr “M” is a CSULB Alumni who has 42 years of rugby experience starting in his native Wales playing for Pontarddulais & Ysgol GyfunYstalyfera. In college he played for the successful Cardiff College of Education. He represented the Welsh Colleges select side and the Public Schoolboy Wanderers and in senior rugby played for Ebbw Vale. With that experience Emyr return to Long Beach State after receiving his PhD from Ohio State to take over the head coaching role from Dale “Doc” Toohey. Dr. Williams is a professor in the kinesiology department.
Mark Stackhouse: Assistant Coach
Mark has been involved with CSULB rugby for 32 years as a player & coach. Mark came to CSULB as a Hall of Fame Football player from Lakewood High School. While a player at Long Beach State he was adaptable and played several positions on the field. Because of his experience and his leadership he was selected captain of CSULB for his senior year. He went onto represent the Southern California Griffins (All-Stars). Mark was the head coach of Southern California Griffins and had several All-American players picked from his teams. Mark has coached the majority of players who have represented Long Beach State Rugby.
Bob Kaplan: Assistant Coach
Bob is a CSULB Alumni who has been involved with rugby for 27 years. Bob was a standout player on some very strong Long Beach State teams and went onto play for the successful Belmont Shore club till injuries cut short his playing career. He took his playing experience and work ethic into coaching here at Long Beach State. At the collegiate level Bob coached the Southern California Griffins and was a Coach for the Collegiate All-American Squad 98-01. On the senior men’s level Bob was the back’s coach for Belmont Shore Super League squad that went to four straight super league finals.
Brian Culligan: Assistant Coach
Brian is a CSULB Alumni who has been involved with rugby for 18 years. Brian played for Long Beach State and stood out as an uncompromising back row player. He captained CSULB and went onto represent the Southern California Griffins All-Stars for three years as their captain. This culminated in being selected as a Collegiate All-American his senior year. Brian brought his passion back to coaching at his alma mater.
Al Lakomskis: Assistant Coach
As a high school multi-sport athlete in Illinois, Al was All-State in Football/ Baseball and All-Regional in Basketball. He went on to star at the University of Arizona’s Rugby program under Coach Dave Sitton were he was a Collegiate All-American in 7’s and 15’s. After his successful collegiate career Al went onto to play club rugby with the Belmont Shore Rugby Club and was integral part of two of the club’s Super league National Championships. Al also represented the USA National Team “Eagles” in 15’s and 7’s rugby where he played multiple times on the international stage.
Phil Sarris: Strength Coach
Phil has been involved in rugby for 40 years. Phil starred while playing at Michigan State where he also represented the Mid-West All-Stars. At the Senior Men’s level Phil played for the successful Belmont Shore Club. Phil's passion for fitness and desire to help our athletes achieve their potential makes Phil an important part of our coaching team.
Kyle is CSULB Alumni ‘92 who played rugby after his aquatics career at Long Beach State. While at Long Beach; Kyle was an All-American his senior year. He went on to be selected to the USA National team “A” squad and was an USA National Team Eagle squad member ’95 -‘97. At the Senior Men’s club level Kyle played at Eastern Suburbs in Sydney and then for the successful Belmont Shore Rugby club. He was a member of the Belmont Shore club’s first national title win in 1998. As a Coach, Kyle has coached at Belmont Shore, Long Beach State, Southern California Griffins and the Collegiate All-Americans. Kyle Coached Long Beach State to Three straight Sweet 16 appearances plus two League titles before stepping down in 2013.
Dr. Dale “Doc” Toohey: Coach Emeritus
Doc Toohey was the founding coach of the Long Beach State program in 1974 and also the former All-American Coach. Doc brings a perspective and a coaching experience in all sport that is unrivaled.
